Every year we all look forward to Halloween. My son is already deep into Halloween fever—we’ve even crafted our first spooky garland today. And soon the big day is here: the day of mega sweets.

Halloween is a time full of excitement, decorations, and of course the sweet treats kids dream about. But for parents, the candy overload can be a real challenge. Many of us secretly wish we could throw away half of the weird candy our kids bring home, but we can’t really do that to them.

So why not surprise the little trick-or-treaters at your door with something different this year and make the little monsters and their parents happy?

That’s why more and more families are looking for fun non-candy Halloween ideas. I got inspired by a children’s birthday party we recently attended. Instead of filling the piñata with candy, it was packed with small toys. And let me tell you: the kids loved it! They got fun teeth, mini whistles, monster claws, fun rings… My kids still play with that stuff today.

Adding a playful twist to trick-or-treating makes Halloween even more special. Imagine their faces when instead of “just” candy, they get a cool little toy to take home. Or make it even more fun: have two bowls at the door—one with candy and one with toys—and let the kids pick. I’m sure that extra twist will be a big hit!

Here are a few ideas that will surprise the little monsters, witches, and zombies at your door this year:
